West Side Story (Noémie B.)

The story takes place in New York city on the west side of Manhattan.
It deals with 2 rival gangs: the Jets who are American and the Sharks who are Puerto Ricans. This film was inspired by Romeo and Juliet and is a musical.

Maria, the sister of the Sharks' leader, Bernardo, falsl in love with Tony, who is with the Jets. They meet at a dance where there are the 2 gangs. However their love is impossible because they are separated by the Sharks and the Jets.
At the end Bernardo kills Ice, the leader of the Jets and Tony's friend. So when Tony sees Ice dead he becomes furious and kills Bernardo. When Chino sees Maria and Tony together he kills Tony because he is jealous. So Maria is now alone without her brother or her lover.

This film is touching and beautiful but I think there are to many songs.

First, Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. The biggest land of denmark touch the Germany, Jutland, but all the rest of the country is a rassemblement of islands.

Where stay to Denmark, near Copenhagen ? Easy ! Between Copenhagen and the sea, there is a large forest, where there are many houses, look like chalets but with only one floor, and we can commend it with a low budget.

It is a really quietly land, in a forest, so in the company with animals. The capital is located one quarter of an hour if you take a car.

Copenhagen is the capital of tranquility, ices and oil sea. In fact, there is no waves in the East of the Denmark, and the typish glutonny is the soft-ice.

Do you think that we can't swim in Denmark ?

It's wrong ! The sea in Danmark is suck as Atlantic Ocean ! Because there is the Gulf Stream who warms the sea, but numerous algaes and jellyfishes stay here.

Copenhagen is a preety city, the capital of ecology with not too many tourists, but High-teck shops, big fashion clothing stores, restaurants and an Hard Rock Caffé with the ZZ top's bass !

So, if you search a city with well food, but so sweet, big stores, sea and quietly houses, Denmark is for you !

A review about Lyon by Fanny VP

Lyon "by night"

Lyon is the 3rd city in France. The city is situated in the East of the France.

There are many museums in Lyon such as visit the museum of Civilisation, the Gallo-Roman museum, the Gadagne museum, ,...witch deal with the story of Lyon. Lyon is the capital of the gastronomy in France and the city was famous for the vine.

We can go to some parks in Lyon but the biggest is the Tête d'or park, in which we can find a garden with a lots of colorful flowers, a zoo with numerous animals and some attractions. We can do shopping in Part-Dieu center, a high tower with various shops, we can go to Rue de la République too. To move into the city with the TCL bus and the underground which connect all of famous places.

There are two very famous church in Lyon: The Basilica Fourvière in the top of the hill and the St Jean cathedral in the old Lyon at the bottom of the hill.

In Lyon on the 8th December people celebrate Marie who stop the fever at the door of the city. That is why in the night of the 8th and 9th December people switch on numerous light than possible. People of other country come in Lyon to see this event.

St Jean on the 8th December night.

Lyon (Noémie B.)

In Lyon, there are so many things to do and to see. Indead there are many neighbourhood which have their own story. For example "Fourvière" and "the old Lyon". In "Fourvière" we can see the basilica which is very beautiful and quiet. In "the old Lyon" we can find the "Traboules" which are a speciality from Lyon and do not exist in an other city. A "Traboule" is the way between 2 streets under houses and buildings.
Lyon is an attractive city for tourists but for its habitants too. The "place Bellecour" and "la Part- Dieu" are very popular. A lot of people come every days for shopping or other things..."Place Bellecour" is the main street of the city and some street far there is the opera which is great to see. And "la Part Dieu" is a famous mall where there are various things to do.
"La Croix Rousse" is an old neighbourhood too. It is a hill in the town.
The park of "la Tête d'or" is perfect when the weather is sunny and warm. There are a lot of animals, and walkers can do bike and diverse other things...
There are a lot of public transport in this town so it is easy to go where we want.
There are some museum as the museum "Gallo-romain" or the museum "Gadagne". They both talk about the story of Lyon. The first deals with Lyon in the antiquity and the second deals with Lyon in an other time.

I am going to talk about Paris,(France) the most tousitic city in the world. You can visit this city during a week without seeing the same monument. Of course, in the things to see, there is the Eiffel Tower, known all over the world. It had been built in 1889 and the hight of the roof is just over 300 m. There are three levels you can reach with a lift or stairs. On these levels, you can have a marvellous panorama of the city, which extends very far. When the weather is sunny, you can see even more far. But the weather is often smoggy in Paris so if the sky is blue, take your chance and climb the Eiffel Tower ! You wouldn't be disappointed ! There is also the arch of triumph which is the world's largest roudabout nowadays. The arch was made for the victorious soldiers to parade through coming back after the war under Napoleon. The huge arch is located at the end of the Champs-Elysées, the world’s most famous avenue almost 2 km long. When you go to Paris in December, the avenue is illuminated at night and it is wonderful, but it uses a lot of electricity ...There is so much to see here at any time of the day or night ! Of course, for the lovers, you can go to the Montmartre hill, which is very romantic. If Paris is far from you, watch "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" and you will see how Montmartre is nice. There are plenty of restaurants, shops ... Go to the Sacre Coeur at night, the basilica is even more beautiful. If you want to see The Joconde for real, and not just in picture, you have to go to The Louvre, the biggest museum in France. This museum is really huge and you will be exhausted at the end of a few hours. If you prefer the shopping, there is all that you want in Paris at the price you want. Don't we say that Paris is the fashion capital ?

Review : Meknes By Wazna.B

Meknes is a city of Marocco and is situated between to Fes and Rabat. This city is very beautiful and very wonderful at the night. The "Médina of Meknes" is a old neighbourhood with some small markets. They sell spices, clothes, shoes and there are some restaurants but they are very small and they sell a few of Moroccan specialities. They find much artisans who preserve their art.
In this city, they find some shantytowns because people have not the means to live in a cottage or a big house. There are mosque too.
During a travel, I can talked and saw the mayor of Meknes, Ahmed Hilal. In the city, there are much young people because the population is in majority young. We talk much the "Bèrbère" , it is a old language of the North Africa.

Lyon is the second biggest city inFrance. Long before it used to be the capital. You can see the sights of Lyon. There are ancient monuments such as the Roman Theatre in Fourvière. There, we can find the famous basilica too.

Here is the basilica of Fourvière during December 8th at the time of the celebration of lights. That day, the city looks enchanted and so magical.

The architecture of Lyon is quite ancient in the "Vieux Lyon" but it is also modern in La Part-Dieu for example. La part-Dieu is well-know for its shopping center and for its railway too. But, in my opinion, it is more pleasant to go to the mall of the "carré de soie" situated in Vaulx-en-Velin or in Cordelier because you can walk outside and you are not locked in.
Besides, in Lyon, I really like the zoo called "Parc de la Tête d'Or". When the sky is sunny you can see exotic animals.
My favourite squares in Lyon are Bellecour (the biggest in Europe) and "Les Terreaux where there are the town hall, the fountain of Bartholdi and the museum "Beaux Arts".
In addition, Lyon can offer you lots of means of transport and it is very pratical.
Finally the stadium Gerland receives the best footballers in the world. I really want to say that Lyon have a gorgeous football team: the Olympique Lyonnais which was the Champion of France 7 times in a row. Well done !
To conclude, I advise you to go to Lyon, you will not be disappointed !!

Review about Lyon ~ Maximin Vandewalle

To start with, where to sleep? There are lots of differents hotels in Lyon at all prices? To my mind, one of the best is the "Hilton" but it is expensive.

In which corner of the world would you like to eat ? In the world wide capital of food I guess. So do I.

What is the typical perfect day for you ? As for me, I would begin wandering in a park where I could escape the town for a while. Then I would maybe eat in a fast food before I would meet my friends and go shopping all the afternoon. At night I would go the a restaurant, an expensive one such as Paul Bocuse to eat french food and to relax myself chatting with friends. Eventually I would walk in the old city's streets. That would be wonderful, would not it ?

I think Lyon is a great city : a historical city which is very lively and attractive.

There are many parks such as "Parc de la tête d'or" where there is always people. However it is not too noisy. People can also see animals there because it is a zoo but if you do not want to see them you can take a ride on a bike, this is amazing! There is a huge Central Business District as well where you can go shopping because there are lots of stores. At night, you can wander in the old city and see "St Jean" for example. You can go to some cultural events which take place in museums, theatres as well. You can also see operas, go to "Place Bellecour" which is one of the biggest place in Europe and to walk on "La Place de la République" which is the main street of the city.

There are several means of transport such as underground, bus, trains..

There is not too much people (not as much as people in Paris, which could be very annoying) and there are lots of suburbs around the city so there is a big diversity of people. Of course you may not like everyone because some people are not really likeable but I think there are people unlikeable everywhere. Sometimes, I acknowledge there is lots of traffic where you would waste your time whereas you have things to do.

However if you are on a skyscraper at night, you would see all the lights of the city and it looks like magic. You can think you are in a unreal dream and nothing can escape you from this fairytale. Is not Lyon famous for its lights ?

Thus I would say Lyon is a great city where you could do so many things with some cons because there is no perfect city to my mind. You have to visit this city!

Things to do in LYON

Lyon offers lots of cultural places lots of tourists are interested in: "Place des Terraux" where there are lots of fountains wherever you look and its highlights are beautiful at night, the "Basilique notre-dame de Fourvière" is famous for its excellent point of view from the tower and for the several mosaics and stained glass windows in 19th-century Byzantine art. There is also the "Place Bellecour" where there is the statue of Louix XIV who is riding a horse. And eventually "St-Jean" which is not far from Fourvière. "St-Jean" is famous for its traboules in the Vieux Lyon, the old part of town. The traboules are passageways that were integrated in the construction of buildings for the silk workers. There are possibly 400 around town but most of them are locked or inaccessible for the public nowadays. the Museum of Fine arts ("Musée des beaux-arts") is THE Museum to see for fans of European art . It is the most important museum after the Louvre in France. So we can say that Lyon is a great cultural town.

Lyon is situated in the southeast of France, in the Rhône-Alpes region. You will be surprised by the numerous things to do there.

Culture

There are several museums telling about the city's history since antiquity : the most famous are Gadagne Museum and Fourvière's Gallo-Roman Museum (which is located in the oldest part of Lyon).

Shopping

There are obviously many places where you can do shopping ! The best example is La Part-Dieu which is a huge mall with restaurants and cinemas, but it is sometimes very expensive, so you have to plan and save a lot of money beforehand!! :)

Transports

If you want to join Lyon from another town, you have to take one of the 4 underground lines. Then, you can travel in Lyon by bus, tram or even funicular.

There are also free bicycles to get the people aware of environment and they are available in many areas. The annual cost is about 10€. These means of transport are called "Velo've".

But if you really want to take advantage of the city, you can simply walk ;)

Beaune:

Beaune is situated in the North East of the France.
I go to this city every month, and I think that every one should visit Beaune.

Activity number 1 is the wine:

There are many activities in Beaune but wine is the most important because a long time ago everyone in Beaune cultivated wine for a living.
The wine of Beaune is much appreciated because some people go to Beaune to drink and taste wine. My uncle is a wine dealer and he travels a lot in France to taste and sell wine.

Visit of Beaune :

If you want to visit some museums and galleries you can go to "Hospices de Beaune", it dates from the Middle Ages, and is very well preserved. The cost of the tour is well worth it; Senior rate is 6.50Euros and includes a small brochure.

Schedules of the box office 2009/2010:

West Side Story by Fanny VP

West Side Story is a musical inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The story talks about two feuding gangs:
-The Jets: an American gang led by Tony and Ice, they think they are the true Americans and the other should go home.
- The Sharks: a Puerto Rican gang led by Bernado.

One afternoon, the Jets and the Sharks fight. Ice and the other members of the Jets are planning a challenge at the Gym's at 10:00.
The two gangs come at the dance. And Tony falls in love with Maria, Bernado's little sister. Both of them know this love is impossible, but they see each other in secret. A friend of Maria's discover her secret but she doesn't tell Bernado.
One night, Ice and Bernado fight and die. Maria is very sad when she knows what has happened, but she still loves Tony.
She sends her friend with a message to Tony. But this friend says that Maria was killed by a member of the Sharks because he discovered Tony loves Maria. Tony decides to die, he calls this member, who finds and kills him.
At the end of the film, Maria only wants no more fights between the two gangs and no more deaths.

I think this film was interesting, it is a modern version of Romeo and Juliet with the danse, the fight between Mercutio and Tibalt and between Bernado and Ice. Juliet was Tibalt's cousin and Maria is Bernado's sister... The film was a little long but the songs cut the film in many parts and create breaks during the story.

West Side Story (by Yasmina)

First of all, West side story is a movie musical directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins.
The scene is set in the 50's/60's
in Manhattan, New York City. It deals with 2 feuding gangs: the Jets who are native-born American versus the Sharks who are from Puerto Rico.
Tony, one of the leaders of the Jets falls in love with one of the Skarks' sister, Maria.
They know they can't be together because of the gangs' war, but that doesn't stop them. West Side Story ends in a bloodshed, so we can conclude that it is a tragedy.

In West Side Story and in Romeo and Juliet (by Shakespeare) there are some similarities such as the conflict which opposes the 2 lovers' families: Maria and Tony on the one hand and Romeo and Juliet on the other hand.

1) In the 2 works, the 2 lovers fall in love at a ball.

2) Then, Tony declares his love to Maria below the fire escape whereas Romeo tells Juliet that he loves her under the balcony .

3) Finally, in Romeo and Juliet the 2 lovers react by committing suicide because of the separation and in West Side Story Tony reacts by killing himself.

To my mind, even if someone is not a fan of musicals, he should not deprive himself of the cinematic pleasure that is West Side Story. It is one of the best musicals ever made. It’s one of the best films . However I really did not like the fact that there were too many songs so we can not take advantage of the action.
My favourite song in West Side Story is "America". Indeed, I like the Puerto Rican accent. Besides, what they are saying is true as well as very comical. I enjoyed their dance. In addition, I love Anita's character.

What a pity that the 2 loving couples can not fulfill their dreams ! But in my opinion, it is the key element which makes the magic of the plot.

West Side Story, by Emeline Lambert

West Side Story is an American musical, inspired by one of Shakespeare's drama : Romeo and Juliet.
The scene takes place in Manhattan, New York City, in the 1950s. It tells the story of 2 rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Sharks come from Puerto Rico and the Jets think they are the true American.
Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the Sharks' leader's sister.
This story is really moving, touching, and I liked it.
But I did not like the songs. They are too many of them, because WSS is a musical, and at the end of the film I did not want to listen to them anymore.
They often dance, and it is sometimes very funny, but mainly beautiful.

Lambert Henri-Louis: Cours du Lundi29/04 (Shakespear in love)

Vocabulary:
steps =>étapes
instead of => au lieu de
fear =>la peur
to fear =>avoir peur

Questions 9 to 12 :

9: The topic of the film seems to be impossible love between Shakespeare and Viola, a playwright and a well-born lady, as well as Romeo and Juliet.
Another topic is the different steps/stages of the creation of the play, here Romeo and Juliet as well as all the problems coming with/belonging to the direction of a play including financial problems as we can see at the beginning of the film.

10: Shakespeare burns the first version of Romeo and Rosaline because the latter cheated on him.

11: He meets Christopher Marlowe, another playwright, his main competitor who was extremely famous at the time before he was assassinated.

12: It is the real synopsis of Romeo and Juliet, that is to say Romeo is a young man of Verona, always in and out of love until he meets Ethel, the daughter of his enemy.
