"Lady Chatterley's Lover" by lawrence I have chosen to speak about "Lady Chatterley's lover"which is a novel by an English writer called D.H.Lawrence.This book was written in 1928 but was published only in 1960(it means 30 years after the author's death). It was published very late because the subject was extremely scandalous.Indeed the book is about a woman "Lady Constance Chatterley" who has an affair with another man, from the working class. The book shocked a lot because of the several explicit sexual scenes and more particulary the presence of the word "fuck".The book was adapted many times to the cinema.

presentation Nicolas S.

Blues
The Civil War ended America's slavery era in the 1860s, however life for southern blacks did not improve and many moved North in search of jobs in the big industrial cities. Among these migrants were itinerant guitarists who played Mississippi Delta Blues. Blues was the counterpoint to gospel : when gospel was about salvation, blues was about damnation. As many blacks moved to Chicago's South Side, a new version of Blues evolved that was more electric (the new electric guitar, the addition of bass, drums and piano) than traditional Blues. The road toward Rock music was set.

The Blues by Nicolas S. a presentation

The Blues

The blues is a kind of music, vocal and/or instrumental, which comes from the Afro-American population working while singing . In this new style, the singer expresses sadness and life's hardship. Traces of blues can be found in Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Heavy Metal, Country Music, Soul Music, Musics Pop or variety and even in Classical Music.

The most ancient forms of Blues come from the South of the United States, at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. These forms were most often oral, sometimes accompanied by a rhythm produced by rudimentary instruments. The first forms of Blues is called "Fife and Drums" played in the Hill Country of Mississippi region.
Then the Blues evolved with more but still simple instruments, such as the acoustical guitar, the piano, the harmonica. The legend tells that one of guitarists, blues men, Robert Johnson, would have signed an alliance with the Devil, which would have allowed him to become a virtuoso ( he was called "Blues Devil" !). Regarding the texts, the Blues consisted at first in often repeating the same verse, two or three times.
Then, the sound evolved and became harder and more physical with the adoption of the new electric guitar, the addition of bass, drums and piano, as well as one or two harmonica(s).

The road toward Rock Music had been set.

AVATAR by Yasmina B.

Avatar is the first film in 12 years from James Cameron, director of the biggest box-office success ever, Titanic. He has produced the most brilliantly constructed stories of modern cinema. In fact, in Avatar, a 3-D film, James Cameron used the new technology which produces very realistic action scenes . This movie, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersible cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to create the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and sweeps of the story.

Avatar is set in the year 2154.We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, Jake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the key to solving Earth's energy crisis. Because the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic, they have created the Avatar Program, in which human "drivers" have their consciousness linked to an avatar, a remotely-controlled biological body that can survive in the lethal air. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the natives of Pandora... the Na'vi.

Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again.

He is given a mission to infiltrate the Na'vi who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. But a beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, and this changes everything. Jake is taken in by her clan, and learns to become one of them, which involves many tests and adventures. As Jake's relationship with his reluctant teacher Neytiri deepens, he learns to respect the Na'vi way and finally finds a place among them. Soon he faces the ultimate test as he leads them in an epic battle that decides nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

First of all, I think that it is a very dramatic and moving film because the end is tragic. Besides the visual experience is beautiful. Moreover James Cameron still has his magic touch. In my opinion
I can't decide whether Titanic or Avatar is the best. They both are touching and interesting !

I recommend this film. You will not regret it !

"Rabbit Proof Fence" by Phillip Noyce - Maximin

The film takes place/is set in western Australia, in a small area/place called Jigalong in 1931.
The narrator and main character is Molly; the other two characters are her little sister Daisy and her cousin Gracie. They were born to a white father so they are half-cast. Mr Neville (also nicknamed Mr devil by the aboriginals), the chief protector of Aborigines decides to send them to the Moore River Settlement, which is a kind of mixture between a school, an orphanage and an Interment camp. The three girls are kidnapped/removed by a policeman working for Mr N. They travel 1200 miles that is to say 2000 km by car, then train and truck. Molly plans to escape and return home because at the camp they must/are forced to/obliged o respect Christian rules and customs.

Their living conditions

At home they were dressed with pieces of cloth whereas at the settlement they must wear dresses and underwear. (cloth=bout de tissu; settlement= camp ou installation)

At home they can play outdoor while at school they have to work.

At home they are free to do whatever they want whereas in the camp they are forced to learn discipline and have to stay indoor.

At home they eat animals they hunt while at school they are obliged to eat British food such as porridge. (hunt=chasser)

At home they use to sleep with their mother on the ground (not floor) in their mud huts whereas they sleep in a bed in a locked dormitory in the camp.

At home they believed in the spirit bird, in Nature's Gods while they are forced to respect and adopt the christian faith and rules at Moore River Settlement.

At home they lived with their mothers in a tribe whereas they are alone, lonely, on their own at school.

At home they are free to roam the land whereas in the camp they are like animals in a cage.

happy clouds in London

happy clouds in London

In June two thousand nine, a British artist created two thousand smiling artificial clouds to give people a sense of optimism during the economic crisis.

They were made of helium, soap and pink vegetable dye

They were released every seven seconds from eight o'clock
and the eco-friendly clouds lasted thirty minutes before dissolving in the air

It was a funny experience

The origins of rock'n'roll : Elvis Presley (Paul-Antoine Blanc)

The article deals with the origins of Rock'n'roll and the confluence of cultures in Memphis.
It talks about the introduction of black rhythm and blues.
When Elvis Presley arrived, he redefined popular music in the 1950's. Rock and Roll was born. Presley mixed rock, blues, gospel, and thus found the sound he had been looking for : Rockabilly.
When I talked about confluence of culture, I meant that Memphis is situated at the heart of the country music region. However it is on the banks of the Mississippi River, the route by which people and goods moved northwards from New Orleans. SO???

Chicago (Noémie)

I read an article about the city of Chicago In Today, an American magazine.
=> Chicago is a city in Illinois, a state in the North of the USA on the Great Lakes.
Chicago is smaller than New York city ( Chicago: 2.8 million people and New York: 8.6 million people). However everyone finds one's place in Chicago, rich or poor, Russian or Italian,...
Chicago is called "The Second city" by the Americans. The city of Chicago "invented" skyscrapers that why it is so famous.

Sears Towers is one of Chicago's greatest sights.
It is visible from anywhere in the city.

There is 33 public beaches where sand and water are clean.

The artistic zone of Chicago is called Wicker Park.

Finally Chicago is an Ethnic melting-pot.

This article was interesting because I was able to learn something about Chicago. The article was clear and simple.

"Grand Torino" and Clint Eastwood, by Emeline LAMBERT

Walt Kowalski was a soldier during the Second World War and he is now living in Detroit, Michigan . Because of his wife's death, he has become a lonely and angry man. He cannot stand the Asian and the Latino immigrants who live in his neighborhood, and he always keeps a gun with him...
But one day, he meets a young Asian who tried to steal his car (a 1972 Gran Torino !). They become friends.

Clint Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski. He is 78 years old, but he still plays like at the beginning of his career : really well.

Gran Torino was directed by Clint Eastwood. It is a mix of comedy, drama and an action film.

Washington

Washington, DC is the capital of the United State of America. Its population is

Arthur P.

Monday 11th January,we went to the Documentation Center of our school...
We search which magazines are most popular in America and England.
The most popular is the English newspaper, "The Time".
We had to find an article on an Englis
h or American magazine and sum it up...
I chose an article in "Vocable" on a
turtle who swam in English Water.
It was seen by British marine scientists, and located (by satellite) more than 500 miles away from the British Virgin Island.
Scientists were surprised because this turtle lives in Caribbean Sea, and in order to come near the British Island, she had to cross the Atla
ntic. Scientists were most surprised when they saw that the turtle had done a round trip[faisait des allés-retours] between The Caribbean and England, and alone !
They never found an explication...

The 10 American Clichés

The article deals with 10 clichés about American people which are :
1- Americans are lazy.
2- They are fat.
3- They drive big cars.
4- They have no style.
5- They make bad tourists.
6- They have no culture.
7- They are loud.
8- They don't care about the environment.
9- They are materialistic.
10- They know nothing about politics.
Do you agree with those clichés ? I think that some clichés are not accurate such as number 6 because there are a lot of historical places , for example Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty and people know about it so culture exists there even if a little but there is knowledge.

Leap of Life LAMBERT Henri-Louis

This article deals with a tiger that lives in the Sundarbans mangrove forest along India and Bangladesh's borders. Crowds chased the pregnant animal for 14 hours after it left the forest and was spotted near a village.
The tiger was finally rescued by a forest ranger after they caught it a fishing net.

This tiger was one of only 70 surviving tigers that live in the Sundarbans mangrove forest along India and Bangladesh's border.

mabrouka 's summary of welcome to the future

The Japanese created robotic limbs to help the old and the disabled move like able-bodied people. They replaced parts of the human body by robotic limbs which is extremely expensive. It is a reference in the world that is why they used it in the "terminator"movie. Thanks to the all robotic suit, disabled people can regain a physical capacity they had lost such as walking.

Vampires - - Lyliane LY

"200 years of vampires"

A long time ago, there were a lot of stories, tales or folk songs dealing with vampires. One of the first books which was dealing with vampires was "The Vampyre" written by Dr Polidori. Then other stories appeared such as "Dracula", "Buffy the Vampire Sleyer" ot currently the famous one "Twilight".
Vampires were first described like monsters drinking human blood, killers. And people had to be scared of them. Directors of films represent them like that :

But currently vampires have taken an other dimension : Indeed they are now a sort of sex symbols, partly because of Stephanie Meyer's book : Twilight. She talks about vampires as perfect humans : strong, smart, beautiful and fast but really lonely, sometimes violent and they have a cold white skin which cannot appear in the sun.

This is the way people represent vampires in "Twilight".

_..--.._.. MAYOTTE .._..--.._ ( Yasmina B.)

I am going to introduce an island called Mayotte. I choose this subject because Mayotte is my motherland even if I was born in La Réunion.
I hope you enjoy !

A little geography :

Mayotte is situated in the Indian ocean. Halfway between Madagascar and the coast of Africa, it is some 1500 km from La Réunion and 10 000 km from Paris.

It consists of two main islands, Petite Terre and Grande Terre, and some twenty islets dispersed over one of the most beautiful closed lagoons in the world.
Mayotte enjoys a tropical maritime climate with only two seasons :
- a dry temperate season from May to October,
- and a hot, rainy season from November to April.

A little History :

The earliest traces of habitation date from the 8th century. These early arrivals would have been Bantu people from East Africa, followed shortly by Swahilis.
In the 9th century Arab and Persian traders arrived, bringing with them Islam.
In the 16th century the first Europeans arrived, the Portuguese and the Dutch. They were followed by the English and the French in the 17th century.
In 1841, the Sultan Adriantsouly sold Mayotte to France.
Mayotte is part of the Archipelago of the Comores, which became a French colony in 1946. When the Comores obtains their independence in 1975, only the people of Mayotte voted to remain French, and the Island became a territory of the French Republic.

On March the 29th 2009, 95 % of the population of Mayotte voted to be a French department.
The process of becoming a French overseas department will be completed in 2011.

A cultural mosaic :

Mayotte has inherited a very diversified culture several origins : African, Persian, Oriental, Malagasy, European and Arab origins.
The principal religion is Islam. In fact 90% of the population are muslim.
In mayotte we speak 3 languages:
- the official language is french, of course
- the 2 locals languages are "mahorais" and malagasy.

Women play an important role in life on Mayotte. Owners of land and houses, responsible for household management, influential in local politics, women are the stabilisers of the island's economic life.

The traditional dress is composed of 2 clothes: a "salouva" like a dress and a "kichal" put on the head or on the shoulders, in differents shapes and colors.

Personally, I have my own traditional dress but I wear it on special events only.

An island where nature reigns :

Mayotte offers an abundance of fauna and flora. Baobab, Tulip tree, blackwood, Tamaka and catalpa can be found in the dry humid forests from north to south. Here too one finds lianas and magnificent orchids there are over 50 species on mayotte among them the vanilla plant.

Here is the famous Mont choungui, the highlest mountain in Mayotte situated in the South.

This is the lake of Dziani situated in Petite Terre.
It is a former crater.

Among the wildlife, there are the maki, whales, dolphins, the roussette ... etc .

The gastronomy :

The local fruits are paw paw, sugarcorne, coconut, bananas, mango, pineaple...

This is my favourite food. It is called "Pilao". It is like Paëlla but without seafood.

Finally,
I am going to show you beautiful beaches of Mayotte.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING !

THE END =)

Sea of Hands Vanessa

The sea of Hands is a Citizen's movement to get lots of signatories and to show the possible reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
The Sea of Hands became a symbol of solidarity, it is a representation which says "everybody should hold hands", together we can stop racism.

You can add your voice to the growing number of Australians calling for justice for Indigenous peoples, to enjoy their cultures, languages and traditions; and to they have cultural heritage respected and protected.

"Forgive, Forget"?’ : Maybe we can say it is a catchphrase but one should understand that if injured people may forgive offenses, they cannot really forget.
