Sea of Hands (by LABIDI Sarra)

Sea of Hands

This is an Aboriginal flag hand printed together with a little poem explaining it worded as the Aboriginal people speak it.

Sea of Hands origins

The Sea of Hands was conceived in 1997. It was created by ANTaR. The Sea of Hands is Australia's public art installation and it colourfully represents the names of over 300,000 Australians who have shown their support for native title and reconciliation.
Australian Artists Against Racism (AAAR) proposed to create hands with the six colours of the Aboriginal flag (red, black and yellow), the Torres Strait Islander flag (blue, green and white), and the Australian flag. They created those recyclable hands to plant. And The Sea of hands was born!

Australians for Native Title & Reconciliation (ANTaR) has developed an interactive web site, Sea of Hands Online, giving an opportunity for Australians to make people do justice for Indigenous Australians, as part of the Close The Gap campaign.
You can create your hand in the latter link. Enjoy !
