LAMBERT Henri-Louis sea of hands.

The Sea of Hands is ANTAR's (Australians for Native Title and Reconcilation) primary public education initiative, it was created in 1997 in Australia .The Sea of Hands has been installed in every major city and many regional locations throughout Australia, and continues to gather signatures everywhere it appears.

250000 Australian have signed their names in 120000 plastic hands in order too support ANTaR.

In this photo, we can see 70,000 plastic hands in six colours.
The six colours of the Sea of Hands represent the colours of the Aboriginal flag (red, black and yellow), the Torres Strait Islander flag (blue, green and white
),and the Australian flag.

The Sea of hands is very important for young Australians. Its goal is to give support for Australians to recover their native land.

Many artists have join the sea of hands as Rachel Macy; Jess Morisson,...

In our class, we have watched a film about the stolen generation, which
was very interesting. It speaks about a family whose children were kidnapped. This film touched me because I learned that young Australian natives have suffered in the past.

My opinion:

Before these English lessons, I knew nohing about ANTaR and when we began speaking about it, it did not interest me a lot.

But having made this research on ANTaR, I understand that what they did was extremely important and I know what happened to Australian children and I am sure that I could without problem write my name and a pretty word or two behind a plastic hand.I learned what "solidarity" means.

Sea of hands - Maximin

The Sea of Hands is Australia's largest public art installation and colourfully represents the names of over 300,000 Australians who have shown their support for native title and reconciliation.

ANTaR is an Australian organization for the defense of aboriginal rights.
They want aboriginals to be well treated
Over 250,000 Australians have signed their names on one of 120,000 plastic hands that make up the Sea of Hands, to show their support for Native Title and Reconciliation.

This picture represents the Aboriginal flag with Australia instead of the yellow round. The Aboriginal flag is composed of 3 colors which symbolize their culture. Black represents themselves, red represents the earth (particularly the sand of the Australian desert) and yellow represents the sun.

SEA OF HANDS:

The sea of hands supports native title and reconciliation between Aboriginal Australians and the Australian government .Antar organised the sea of and hands. I like this organisation because I think it is a sort of excuse to Aboriginal. In fact White people persecute them in the past.
Rabbit proof fence talke about this.

ABORIGINES :

When the Europeans met the Aborigines of Australia, two hundred years ago, they believed to be in the presence of real prehistoric survivors of time with regard to their appearance these persons half-blood who move practically naked with hair black practise the hunting to food.

ABORIGINES FLAG :

It was founded in 1972 by the Aboriginal artist ¹ Harold Thomas.
The colors and shapes of the flag represent various aspects of the southern continent and Aborigine culture. Thus, the black symbolizes the color of the original inhabitants, the red represents the earth's central desert and bloodshed in the last 2 centuries, and yellow symbolizes the sun which gives life.
In 1995, the Aboriginal flag was recognized by the government as an official flag

ABORIGINES ART :

Time also called dream the dream, is the central theme of the culture of Australian Aborigines. The "Dreamtime" explains the origins of their world, Australia and its people. According to tradition, the giant creatures, like the Serpent arc-en-ciel, came out of the earth, sea and sky and created life and the Australian landscape

RABBIT-PROOF-FENCE :

Is the story of three young girls molly 14 years his sister daisy 8 years and their cousin Gracie who are 10 years of aboriginal children who live near their mothers. but their story is far from happy after the laws these young mongrels are torn from their mothers with resistance to be installed in camps for Métis to live according to the custom white

MY OPINION :

I like this film. Molly Daisy and Gracie are the principal characters. They are very courageous !it's sad to see families live in such a condition and hide with their children. my personal opinion about this legislation I think it is severe because Aborigines are not inferior to anyone and we do not deserve being locked in a cage or in the institution to become like white

LY Lyliane - Sea of hands.

"The Sea of Hands was created" in 1997.

The Sea of Hands is an initiative of ANTaR's (Australians for Native Title and Reconcialation). ANTaR's fights for Aboriginals' rights.
Currently, it is the biggest art installation in Australia. The Sea of Hands has been installed in every main city (such as Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney) and many regional locations all around Australia (in Northern Territory: Yulura, Uluru. In western Australia: Geraldton, Perth, Warriparinga.).
Hands are planted in the ground and on the back of every hands, there are stickers where people can write something such as a name.
There are a lot of signatures : more than 300 000 Australians have signed their names on one of those hands.
So it shows that Australians want and support the Reconciliation between the peoples.

Australia :

The 3 colors (red, yellow and black) symbolise the Aboriginal flag. This is why they are the main colors use for the Hands. Here is the Aboriginal flag in the Australian map. It may symbolise the cohabitation and the beggining of a reconciliation (?).

The word "aboriginal" was used in Australia to describe Indigenous people. Indigenous Australians are the original inhabitants of Australia. When the English people arrived in Australia, Aboriginals were discriminated against and segregated from the white population. Aboriginals' children were stolen and sent to centers. The settlers, the white population, wanted to eliminate Aboriginals so they created some laws which allow them to kidnap children. They "made" half-castes: they wanted to marry every Aboriginal women to white men so that little by little, generations after generations, there is no Aboriginal blood anymore. Fortunately their goal was not reach. I just wonder how humans can do those things to other human beings. What happened is totally horrible.

Here is a picture of the half-castes who played in the film "Rabbit-proof fence" (a real story).
This film shows the violence happened in Western Australia during the persecution. The 3 girls that we see on the picture were stolen to their mothers and sent to a center. They slept in a dormitory and it was quite dirty. When they arrived to the center, they discovered a lot of other half-castes.

Here is an Aboriginal surrounded by a "field" of hands with an Aboriginal's instrument. I took this picture because to my mind, this is a way to show that everyone want to reconciliate. For me, it is a beautiful picture who shows that cohabitation can exist. But did Aboriginals really forgive? And if they did, can they forget ? I guess that what white people did is unforgetable but maybe forgivable because it is the past and people do not have to be focused on what happened but on what will happen. People should not look behind them. But it is not a reason to forget because mistakes help to look toward a brighter future. Sometimes, people need to remind them their mistakes in order not to do the same things again.

An Aboriginal woman and a white women who are holding hands and hugging each other (in a sea of hands).

They look like close and quite happy: they are smiling.
A proof of reconciliation ?

So this tragic event and the Sea of Hands are a sign of solidarity and a will to apologise or to forget and maybe to forgive (?) what happened.

Their goals are :

- justice for indigenous people

- the possibility to enjoy their culture, language, traditions and else ...

About Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders:

Both groups represent 2.6 % of Australia's population. The term "Aboriginal" matches with indigenous inhabitants of the main land of Australia : Tasmania (official portal of Tasmania).
