Vampires - - Lyliane LY

"200 years of vampires"

A long time ago, there were a lot of stories, tales or folk songs dealing with vampires. One of the first books which was dealing with vampires was "The Vampyre" written by Dr Polidori. Then other stories appeared such as "Dracula", "Buffy the Vampire Sleyer" ot currently the famous one "Twilight".
Vampires were first described like monsters drinking human blood, killers. And people had to be scared of them. Directors of films represent them like that :

But currently vampires have taken an other dimension : Indeed they are now a sort of sex symbols, partly because of Stephanie Meyer's book : Twilight. She talks about vampires as perfect humans : strong, smart, beautiful and fast but really lonely, sometimes violent and they have a cold white skin which cannot appear in the sun.

This is the way people represent vampires in "Twilight".

_..--.._.. MAYOTTE .._..--.._ ( Yasmina B.)

I am going to introduce an island called Mayotte. I choose this subject because Mayotte is my motherland even if I was born in La Réunion.
I hope you enjoy !

A little geography :

Mayotte is situated in the Indian ocean. Halfway between Madagascar and the coast of Africa, it is some 1500 km from La Réunion and 10 000 km from Paris.

It consists of two main islands, Petite Terre and Grande Terre, and some twenty islets dispersed over one of the most beautiful closed lagoons in the world.
Mayotte enjoys a tropical maritime climate with only two seasons :
- a dry temperate season from May to October,
- and a hot, rainy season from November to April.

A little History :

The earliest traces of habitation date from the 8th century. These early arrivals would have been Bantu people from East Africa, followed shortly by Swahilis.
In the 9th century Arab and Persian traders arrived, bringing with them Islam.
In the 16th century the first Europeans arrived, the Portuguese and the Dutch. They were followed by the English and the French in the 17th century.
In 1841, the Sultan Adriantsouly sold Mayotte to France.
Mayotte is part of the Archipelago of the Comores, which became a French colony in 1946. When the Comores obtains their independence in 1975, only the people of Mayotte voted to remain French, and the Island became a territory of the French Republic.

On March the 29th 2009, 95 % of the population of Mayotte voted to be a French department.
The process of becoming a French overseas department will be completed in 2011.

A cultural mosaic :

Mayotte has inherited a very diversified culture several origins : African, Persian, Oriental, Malagasy, European and Arab origins.
The principal religion is Islam. In fact 90% of the population are muslim.
In mayotte we speak 3 languages:
- the official language is french, of course
- the 2 locals languages are "mahorais" and malagasy.

Women play an important role in life on Mayotte. Owners of land and houses, responsible for household management, influential in local politics, women are the stabilisers of the island's economic life.

The traditional dress is composed of 2 clothes: a "salouva" like a dress and a "kichal" put on the head or on the shoulders, in differents shapes and colors.

Personally, I have my own traditional dress but I wear it on special events only.

An island where nature reigns :

Mayotte offers an abundance of fauna and flora. Baobab, Tulip tree, blackwood, Tamaka and catalpa can be found in the dry humid forests from north to south. Here too one finds lianas and magnificent orchids there are over 50 species on mayotte among them the vanilla plant.

Here is the famous Mont choungui, the highlest mountain in Mayotte situated in the South.

This is the lake of Dziani situated in Petite Terre.
It is a former crater.

Among the wildlife, there are the maki, whales, dolphins, the roussette ... etc .

The gastronomy :

The local fruits are paw paw, sugarcorne, coconut, bananas, mango, pineaple...

This is my favourite food. It is called "Pilao". It is like Paëlla but without seafood.

Finally,
I am going to show you beautiful beaches of Mayotte.

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING !

THE END =)

Sea of Hands Vanessa

The sea of Hands is a Citizen's movement to get lots of signatories and to show the possible reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
The Sea of Hands became a symbol of solidarity, it is a representation which says "everybody should hold hands", together we can stop racism.

You can add your voice to the growing number of Australians calling for justice for Indigenous peoples, to enjoy their cultures, languages and traditions; and to they have cultural heritage respected and protected.

"Forgive, Forget"?’ : Maybe we can say it is a catchphrase but one should understand that if injured people may forgive offenses, they cannot really forget.

War on Screen

Band of Brothers: (the veterans)

http://www.dday-overlord.com/eng/band_of_brothers_veterans.htm

The story of the men from the 506 PIR, 101st Airborne, Easy Company

"Ordinary men, an extraordinary story". This sentence summarizes perfectly the D-Day veterans and also the Easy Company veterans and what they have been through in Europe between 1944 and 1945.

Steven Spielberg has always been interested in World War II. For example, some of WW2 films are: 1941, Empire of the Sun. That is why he decided to direct the very realistic film Saving Private Ryan, which tells the story of a platoon searching Private Ryan during the battle of Normandy.

This movie was a huge success around the world. Saving Private Ryan had to be successful so that Band of Brothers could exist.

Thus, there are similarities in terms of direction between Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers with the now famous technique of "shoulder camera" which gives a very realistic impression during the film, including during combat.

But it is mainly its respect for historical details (both the script and the fights) which makes Band of Brothers being one of the best World War II series.

More than 10.000 participants, 500 actors and a budget of more than $120.000.000 were necessary for its creation which made it one of the most expensive series in history.

Apocalypse Now
is a 1979 American epic war film set (which takes place) during the Vietnam War. The plot revolves around two US Army
special operations officers, one of whom, Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) of a special operation unit, is sent into the jungle to assassinate the other, the rogue
(rebelle) and presumably insane (mad) Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) of Special Forces. The film was produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The script is based on Joseph Conrad's novella (a long short-story) Heart of Darkness. The film became notorious (infamous) in the entertainment press due to its lengthy (rather long) and troubled (full of problems) production, as documented (described) in Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. Marlon Brando showed up to the set overweight and Martin Sheen suffered a heart attack. The production was also beset by extreme weather that destroyed several expensive sets (décors). In addition, the release date of the film was delayed several times as Coppola struggled to come up with an ending and to edit the millions of feet of footage that he had shot.

The film won the Cannes Palme d'Or and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

All three films condemn war for its bloodshed and the horrors committed on the battlefield for they are all drawn in dark colours such as all shades of gray and black with dark red for AN. The soldiers look/seem small and fragile against the sky which enhances /underlines / highlights their precarious position.

However SPR and BB salute/ highlight the bonds of friendship created between soldiers during the fights such as brotherhood and help, sometimes heroic/ brave actions done to save a fellow soldier from danger even at the cost of one's own life. The light from the horizon creates an impression of hope in the midst of chaos.

On the other hand the poster of Apocalypse Now, especially the one above, while using the same technique as the other two (the faces of two men at the top against a dark cloudy sky, the dark earth at the bottom and the light coming from the horizon line) conveys a completely different message -- that of madness and evil (we are not sure the men are soldiers or crazy people) drenched in blood and fire (the background is red which underlines the impression of bloodshed -river of blood, and napalm destroying men and Nature in Vietnam) represented by the setting sun over the river.
